The state government is planning to build a heritage hotel and exhibition hall at Canning House. The government is giving priority to heritage tourism. There are also plans to build a Heritage Hotel in a building or mansion intertwined with the memory of history. It is from this plan that the exhibition has been drafted at the historic Canning House in the southern 24 Parganas, the Heritage Hotel and a memorial to India's first viceroy. There will also be a library.
In 2019, the State Heritage Commission took charge of this house. Although Canning is a sprawling city in the Sundarbans, it is steeped in history. The British government planned to build a big port here. The dream of the English was that the port of Canning would be like the ports of Calcutta and Singapore.
In 1853, the Bengal Chamber of Commerce warned the British government that the port of Calcutta was in trouble due to the continuous siltation of the Hooghly River. Not only that, it was feared that the entry of large ships in the future may be stopped.
At that time, a survey was conducted by the British government and it was decided that the junction of Matla and Vidyadhari rivers was suitable for the construction of a new port. The proposed port was named after the then Governor General Lord Canning.
It was introduced as a full-fledged river port by 181-62. The port of Canning was destroyed in a devastating cyclone in 18. Shubhaprasanna, chairman of the Heritage Commission, said, “Some monuments of history are still scattered there. E.g., Canning House. It was the headquarters of administrative and economic activities of the port. Canning House, an example of colonial architecture, is now in ruins. We are going to help in its reform and preservation.
According to the Heritage Commission, a private company wants to build a heritage hotel there in a joint venture with the state government. Shubhaprasanna said, 'Preservation and renovation of an ancient house is not the last word. It also needs proper maintenance on a permanent basis. If the private company builds a hotel here, it will act as a catalyst in the maintenance of the house.
Besides, it will also help in the development of tourism in the region.
